Global Debate on Killer Robots News Journal 13

Will There Be a Ban on Killer Robots?

Around the world countries like the United Kingdom, Russia, and even the United States have made big strides in the field of Artificially Intelligent Weapons. Countries are now able to put these weapons in combat situations and have the controlling algorithms work to decided life and death situations. However, despite the progress of some nations, others are more hesitant about the future that this may lead to. One group against this is called the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Made up from arms control activists, human rights activists, and technologists, the group is working to convince countries to create a global treaty that will ban governments from using weapons without people at the controls. This is based on the idea that the subject of AI controlled weapons can be considered a type of moral grey area because of how new the possibility of the real use of it is. Without any time of control over these developments, there is the fear that it will lead to an arms race and could even put the world to the risk of lacking any control over these weapons. Currently, around twenty-six countries have agreed that there is a pressing need to require human control in the use of force. Despite the agreement on this, there is still great investment being put into developing these weapons and so it is unsure of how the future will be for humanless weapons.

This article connects perfectly to the book WE3. In the book, animals are put into weapons suits and are used as weapons to complete tasks. Later in the book, the animals are released into the world and do great damage to the city around them. They even go as far as to kill civilians These animals from the book and the weapons being discussed in the chapter represent the potential futures for weapons. The animals from the book represent a horror story of a possibility should the weapons from the article become so advanced that humans lose the ability to control them.
